There are a lot of companies promising to increase page rank and guarantee you at least a thousand visitors a day.  Looking at it from first instance this sounds tempting and sounds like an easy way for many.  A friend once said never take the easy way always brings you problems.  I suspect this statement still applies.

I found a couple of interesting articles, which I thought, made sense and had some credibility.  The term search engine optimisation is always mentioned by all the authors and that is one of the first things everyone should think about before getting a website.  But what does a none technical person know about optimising a website.  I have had of people claiming they specialise in search engine optimisation, I get at least five emails a day from marketers offering me this service.

In this article I will try to explain in basic words what this all means and what people to watch out for.  I am not qualified in the subject but I have spent quite sometime researching on the subject.

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

Back in the 90s a few developers started learning about spiders and robots (A program which scans pages or websites by following each link and generates various information based on the type of search conducted.)  When spiders crawled their websites they started seeing good results with the search engines like Google and yahoo, they were also getting good page ranking. Now looking at this, this meant that these spiders were actually getting looking for some information from their websites, but what actually? This was the birth of SEO, which has evolved greatly over the years.

According to wikipedia “Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.” This sounds like some food from a grocery store right?   Sounds simple but it has it’s advantages and when this is done wrongly it can affect your business cost you thousands of dollars.

Search engine Optimisation always requires some change in your HTML, or your content management system.  If you hear anyone offering you SEO without actually changing anything to your website, you have to run as fast as you can because that person has no truth in them. I have heard of situations were people have been offered the service, after paying for the service within a day they had a lot of visitors on their websites, but how can it be? Do they pay Google or Yahoo, the answer is simply “NO”, scammers have a lot of websites that they have had for many years and most of them are blogs. Which have a lot of traffic, as soon as you pay they create links to your website or even post ads that encourage people to visit your website. In some cases they redirect their domain names to point to your website. In that way you will definitely have visitors on your website but remember these visitors were actually looking for something else not your website or content related to what you are offering, for example someone looking for “toys” can be redirected to your website and you are actually selling events.  This has no relationship and chances are they will not be interested in your corporate events being held in Florida, they are simply looking for a toy for their eight months old baby who is teething.  Having said this I am sure you understand that this does not benefit you or your business.

A good Search Engine Specialist is normally someone with some level or web development or web design, They will offer you a service that will involve making some changes to your website.
